Buying a condo along Roxas Boulevard may be an ideal move as it leads you to the major thoroughfares, namely, Manila, Pasay City, Paranaque City, and as well as Cavite. Your traveling experience will not be a bore because of the wonderful sights along the way. Be drunk in history as you pass by the prominent parks, buildings, and monuments while on the road. At the end of the day, the highlight of your commute is the famous sunset at the Manila Bay.
Only if this is the case, then we could wrap our days with content and happy smiles on our faces. However, we have to face the awful reality that this scenario is merely possible in dream sequence mode. Like the rest of the world, we share the same sentiments when it comes to the art of commuting. It is an art that no matter how we master it, we miserably fail because of unpleasant and unexpected circumstances.
Commuting, whether via public or private vehicle, is stressful. Period. Every day we must fight demons – er – traffic. Train rides (MRT or LRT) are no different because of technical mishaps. Yes, it is indeed a jungle out there, a wild one at that. It would be miraculous if you managed to arrive at your destination in one piece. It is a bonus if you remain calm, cool, and collected after such soul-stumping ride.
What kind of diversion tactics we need to do to prevent the “Ooh. I’m stuck on this jam. I’ll be late. I’m doomed!” mindset? Read on:
1. Play a soothing playlist. Preferably, choose your own type of music or genre. As long as it entertains you, calms your nerves and lowers your blood pressure.
2. Grab a snack. An empty stomach is not only bad for your health; it also increases your temper. Bring a light snack (i.e. crackers and mineral bottled water) with you. Avoid foul-smelling meals especially on public transport.
3. Try listening to other media sources. Are you tired of listening to the same playlist every day? Try “reading” an audio novel, laugh (secretly) on funny podcasts, or learn a new language with the use of audio instructional materials.
4. Break the Filipino time habit. Analyze your daily commute first by determining the ideal time to travel in the morning. Then, by all means, move heaven and earth to leave thirty minutes early. It is a valuable time saver, I swear.
5. Avoid using gadgets. Another unbreakable habit of private motorists. Even it features a voice-recognition technology, tinkering with your smartphone is a major distraction while you’re behind the wheel.
6. Follow the traffic rules. Sometimes it is hard to indoctrinate ourselves because we hate being stuck and being late. But the good thing is you could avoid accidents. Be aware of your surroundings because reckless drivers could ruin your day.
7. Keep your cool. In other words, avoid road rage. Delinquent and hot-headed drivers will surely test your patience. But no matter what happens, don’t be like them and don’t retaliate. Else, it will be a gruesome case of physical violence once again.
